This summer, I’ve noticed weeds are like uninvited guests at a party. They are not welcome. Weeds are tenacious and can appear anywhere. In the photo above, is a classic weed finding a nice comfy spot in a concrete shopping center parking lot. They pop up on sidewalks, along the road, and in gardens and flower beds without notice. And let’s be honest, we don’t particularly like weeds. Even though we try to eliminate them and pull them up, they keep returning like that one person who never gets the hint.
In the photo below, without any help, a weed in my neighborhood found its own little sweet spot 20 feet up a concrete block wall! Weeds will grow in spots where they are hard to get to but ignored for too long, they will take over and choke out the good plants in the garden or crack the concrete.

Our Top Three Health Weed Culprits: Weight Loss, Blood Pressure, and High Cholesterol
As we age, certain health issues tend to pop up more frequently, much like those pesky weeds in our gardens. Let’s take a closer look at our top three health culprits that need attention: weight loss, blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
1. Weight Loss: The Elusive Goal
Losing weight can feel like chasing a mirage, especially as we get older. Our metabolism slows down, and those extra pounds seem to cling on for dear life. But don’t despair! Small, consistent changes can make a big difference. Focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. And remember, every little bit of physical activity helps – even a daily walk around the block can work wonders.
2. Blood Pressure: The Silent Stalker
High blood pressure, often called the “silent killer,” can sneak up on us without any obvious symptoms. It’s crucial to keep an eye on it because it can lead to serious health problems like heart disease and stroke. To keep your blood pressure in check, reduce your salt intake, stay active, and manage stress. And don’t forget to check your blood pressure regularly – knowledge is power!
3. High Cholesterol: The Sneaky Saboteur
High cholesterol is another sneaky health issue that can quietly wreak havoc on our bodies. It can lead to clogged arteries and increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. To combat high cholesterol, adopt a heart-healthy diet that includes plenty of fiber, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are also key strategies.
Can You Spot Weeds ?

Can You Spot The Gnarly Weeds Trying To Take Root and Growing in Your Health Attitudes?
Its easy to spot weeds along the sidewalk and in the garden. But what about weeds growing in our health thinking? Often called “stinking thinking” or “hardening of the attitudes”, we often pretend they’re not there, hoping they’ll just go away on their own. But just like stubborn garden weeds, or the weeds in the sidewalk cracks, they keep coming back. So, instead of ignoring the health weeds, let’s tackle them head-on with a good sense of humor and a new solid plan.
While these health culprits- weight, cholesterol and blood pressure can be challenging, they’re not unbeatable. Like garden weeds we must attack them, deal with them, and pull them out when we spot them. With a proactive approach and a positive attitude, you can keep them in check and enjoy a healthier, happier life.
Where to start checking for your weeds?
An annual physical is the first crucial step for seniors as it provides a comprehensive overview of their health, enabling early detection and management of potential issues. Regular checkups allow for the monitoring of vitals like weight, cholesterol and blood pressure. Ignoring these 3 big “weeds” can lead to undiagnosed problems that may become more difficult to treat over time. Don’t ignore the weeds the doctor brings to your attention. Follow the data. Take action on the recommendations. Start pulling any weeds in your garden.
