I had getting the shingles vaccination shot on my To Do list for a few months. I finally stopped procrastinating and got the shot last week. I knew Shingles causes a blistering rash on one side of your body or face, along with other symptoms such as fever, headache, and nerve pain. I knew Shingles can also lead to serious complications, such as eye damage, pneumonia, and long-term nerve pain. I got he shot because I knew Shingles could be a debilitating condition that would affect My quality of life. Why did I procrastinate on this important vaccination for months? I waited because I feared getting a shot that turned out to be painless.
If you are procrastinating, I have 5 good reasons for you to consider getting the shot.
1. My healthy neighbor in her 60s got shingles in June of this year. That got my attention. 2. Then My healthy Yoga instructor in her 40s said got shingles last year 3. The lady in line when I was getting my shingles shot said she got shingles 2 years ago and it was very painful 4. The cost of the shot was covered by my health insurance 5. The Pharmacist said it is 95 % effective and the shots require no appointment at Publix. There are - My 5 good reasons to get vaccinated!
The shot- Its not that bad!
The good news is that there is a vaccine that can prevent shingles and reduce the risk of its complications. The vaccine is called Shingrix, and it is recommended for adults 50 years and older, regardless of whether they have had shingles or chickenpox before. Shingrix is given as two doses, separated by 2 to 6 months.
The saw the Publix pharmacist was back behind the counter shaking up the Shingles prescription shot. I said are you makining me a cocktail? He said :
“Yes its sorta like a cocktail -I know I was a bartender before becoming a pharmacist! "
The Pharmacist said Shingrix is safe and well-tolerated by most people. The Pharmacist was back there shaking up the prescription pre shot. He said it was like a cocktail and he was once a bartender before becoming a pharmacist! Side effects from the shot usually go away on their own within a few days and do not interfere with daily activities. You should get the second dose of Shingrix even if you have a reaction after the first dose, unless your doctor advises otherwise.
As I said, Shingrix is covered by most health insurance plans, including Medicare Part D. You can get Shingrix at your doctor’s office or at a pharmacy that offers vaccinations. If you have questions about Shingrix or your eligibility for the vaccine, talk to your healthcare provider.
