Nearly 10 years ago, our little cocker spaniel was not so little. Our children were still at home and he was getting his fair share of table scraps. When I took him to the vet our former country vet was appalled at his weight which was 37# in lieu of a target weight of 25#! The vet advised a dog should NEVER get dog treats! From that time forward our dog Denny has enjoyed vegetables as treats. He favors carrots, cucumbers and even roasted brussels sprout. Denny was soon below his target 25# and has remained there in the time since. Nowadays I have joined him in a mostly plant-based diet. He happily helps me finish nearly any salad. He even likes radishes! Just like humans, however, kale is a hard sell. Denny will be 18 in July and remains healthy and active.
You don't know the half of it! My wife does not like popcorn. On the occasions I make it now, I use nutritional yeast in lieu of butter -- Amazingly he likes that also. He is a a weird but happy dog. One of my unpublished drafts with Substack that never made it to press was about Denny in some depth. In the evening when we put him to bed he always has either carrots or cucumbers. He wouldn't go to bed without them now that he has been conditioned. If we are out of cucumber, he can be convinced to go for zucchini slices also. When it is in season he eats corn on the cob just like the rest of us as long as you spin it for him. He is a true Midwesterner.
I read a stat in the newspaper a few years ago that stuck with me. Over 70% of pet owners let their pet sleep in bed with them. I mentioned this to one of my customers and he said "of course". He had 2 Doberman Pinchers, and I never could get over the image in my brain of those 2 large black dogs sleeping in bed with him and his wife! Im thinking you left of the part where Denny jumps up in bed with you after eating his carrots!
Denny has NEVER slept in anyone's bed. We all need boundaries. Before we sold our too large home, it is true that he had a pretty nice room all to himself -- our laundry room :) -- he currently sleeps in a bathroom

Its amazing Denny likes radishes and cucumbers. I'm sure that's why he is 18 and healthy. Hope you can treat him to popcorn on Saturday nights!
